Peterson Beach With What I Think Are Pitcher Thistles, a Threatened Species Native to Great Lakes Dunes

“We have traveled this day / to the bounding sea, O Lord, / to the far edge of the habitable land, as to the utter end of our own measure / and ability and strength, to find here reminders of your limitless / presence extended immeasurably beyond us. In this place may we recall our blessed smallness.”

–From “A Liturgy for Arriving at the Ocean,” pg. 65 in Every Moment Holy, Douglas Kaine McKelvey

One of my trip highlights was renting a kayak and spending a quiet morning paddling down the Platte River towards Lake Michigan

Kayaking was a great way to explore the water!

“Here let us feel ourselves more vulnerable and in awe, … small but known.” –from “A Liturgy for Those Who Sleep in Tents”, pg. 71 in Every Moment Holy

Campsite Fun! I also brought my painting supplies with me, which was an enjoyable way to spend time outside.

May the patterns of your eternal beauties / be fixed in our souls, O Lord. That the lives we lead and the words we speak might hereafter be infused with a grace / that would show forth your beauty. May your people be as winsome as the sunset, O God, and give as little cause for offense, as they carry your name, your truth, / and your love into this world. –from “A Liturgy for Sunsets,” pg. 77 in Every Moment Holy

Burn bright your mercies, O God! Flame high your love, O Lord! Illumine our shadows! Warm our cold hearts! Let us live alight with holy flame.” –from “A Liturgy for the Enjoyment of Bonfires in the Night,” pg. 75 in Every Moment Holy
